DIRECTION

And not in the physical sense. Direction in terms of the shape of one's future, direction away from the past and into the void we've named Future. Hopefully you've all come to accept the fact that not only is direction unstoppable, but it's constantly changing. It changes as a result of you and 6 billion others acting simultaneously and seamlessly on the same planet, the same rock floating through space that every ancestor you've had has occupied, and ceased to occupy. You are less physical being, and more a time-line, continually expanding as long as you retain consciousness, and forever changing time-lines to come even when your own physical person ceases to be.

This leads to the subtopic of Expectation.
*This segment has been removed due to an overwhelming urge. To remove it. Sorry happy people.*

TLDR: Expectation will most often lead to less net happiness gain no matter the scenario. Don't do it. Live in the moment and for the future, and never without the past in mind. Lastly, don't forget to give your children unique names. That's vital.

  1. I agree with a lot of this but I'd like to point out that expectations can have an upside. For example, let's say you are taking a trip to Las Vegas with a couple buddies. Here are two expectation scenarios, the first agrees with you and the second doesn't.

Expectation 1: You're really excited for the trip as you're expecting to go to a strip club with your friends. When you get there, you aren't able to get passed the bouncer since you aren't quite 18 and you are disappoint. Blah blah sadness.

Expectation 2: You're really excited for the trip as you're expecting to have an exciting and fun adventure with your friends. When you get there, you aren't able to get into a strip club but you and your friends are still expecting a great night so you go somewhere else where you meet chicks and have a raging night.

I think the key is specificity. If you are expecting to have fun and you're thinking positive, you work to make that a reality and it makes your attitude positive. It's when you're expecting something specific where you run into more risks. I suppose I'm blending attitude and expectation though but I just thought I'd chime in. Last christmas I expected it to be not that great so anything that made it fun would make me extra stoked. It didn't really work out like that as it just resulted in a negative attitude despite the fun of the day.
